Photos. This is the real reason most people buy them. Booties are in newborn photo sessions, coming home photos, milestone shots, and family photos for the entire first year. They're a detail that photographs beautifully and that people remember.

Gifts. Booties are one of the most popular baby shower and newborn gifts because they're small, affordable, and feel meaningful without requiring the recipient to have a specific size or stage in mind.

Keepsakes. This might be the most underrated reason. A pair of newborn booties, kept after the baby outgrows them, becomes a genuinely emotional object years later. Parents keep these in memory boxes more than almost anything else.

Soft, breathable, gentle. Made from double gauze cotton, the same fabric used in our nursing covers and some blanket designs. Muslin booties are the right choice for:

• Newborns with sensitive skin
• Warm weather, where breathability matters most
• Indoor wear, since they're soft but not particularly structured
• Babies who are not yet crawling or pulling up

The texture is genuinely soft against newborn skin, and the breathability means feet don't overheat the way they can in synthetic alternatives.

Slightly more structured, a bit more durable, with a firmer sole. Canvas baby booties work well for:

• Slightly older babies starting to be more active
• Outdoor use, where a bit more structure helps
• Cooler weather, since canvas holds warmth a bit better than muslin

Canvas holds its shape better over time and tends to look slightly more "shoe-like" if that's the aesthetic you're going for.

Baby feet grow fast, and unlike adult shoes, there's no universal sizing standard across brands. A "0-3 months" bootie from one company might fit a different age range than another.

A few general guidelines:

0-6 months: Most newborns. Feet are typically very small, often under 4 inches. Booties at this stage are almost entirely about warmth and aesthetics rather than fit for movement.

6-9 months: Babies are often starting to be more mobile, even if not walking yet. Slightly more room needed, particularly if booties will be worn during crawling.

9-15 months: Many babies are pulling up, cruising, or taking first steps. Booties at this stage need enough room for movement without being loose enough to fall off.

Our advice: when in doubt, size up slightly rather than down. A bootie that's a touch large stays on with socks or thicker layers. A bootie that's too small is uncomfortable and often gets removed entirely.

A few details separate well-made booties from ones that fall apart after a few wears:

Soft sole construction. For babies who aren't walking, a soft, flexible sole is better than a rigid one. It allows natural foot movement and doesn't restrict development.

Secure closure. Elastic ankles, ties, or snaps that actually keep the bootie on. Loose booties end up lost in strollers, car seats, and laundry constantly.

Breathable fabric. Synthetic materials trap heat and don't allow feet to breathe properly. Natural cotton fabrics, whether muslin or canvas, perform significantly better against skin.

Quality stitching. Check the seams. Booties get handled roughly, chewed on, and washed repeatedly. Loose stitching shows up fast.
